Petits fours in your search results

Recently Google made a change to show more results from a domain for certain types of queries -- this helped searchers get to their desired result even faster. Today Google expanded the feature so that, when appropriate, more queries show additional results from a domain. As a webmaster, you’ll appreciate the fact that these results may bring targeted visitors directly to the pages they’re interested in.

Here’s an example: in the past, the query (the Museum of Modern Art), might have triggered two results from the official site:

With this iteration, our search results may show:
• Up to four web results from each domain (i.e., several domains may have multiple results)
• Single-line snippets for the additional results, to keep them compact
As before, Google still provide links to results from a variety of domains to ensure people find a diverse set of sources relevant to their searches. However, when our algorithms predict pages from a particular site are likely to be most relevant, it makes sense to provide additional direct links in our search results.

Like all the hundreds of changes Google make a year, Google is trying to help users quickly reach their desired result. Even though Google is constantly improving our algorithms, our general advice still holds true: create compelling, search-engine friendly sites in order to attract users, buzz, and often targeted traffic!

Digg Denies Spammers Link Juice, Goes Nofollow

In a move to dissuade spammers, popular social bookmarking site Digg has added a "rel=nofollow" tag to all links on the site that it does not consider trustworthy and popular. Comments, less popular posts and links on user profiles would not derive link juice. Though in its blog, Digg was not specific as to what levels of popularity would get the Nofollow tag removed.

An assortment of people submit stories to Digg just to garner links in hope to get a rush of traffic. Even if the link does not gain in popularity, search engine crawlers count them in and return value to the spammers.

According to Digg, it was contemplating this step since at least 2007 and the decision on the recommendation of leading SEO/SEM experts. But as Google had forced Twitter to integrate Nofollow, experts believe that Google might have something to do with the move.

Google Hits Back With Project Caffeine

Unveils The Preview Version Of Its Search Engine Infrastructure Upgrade

After Microsoft recently launched their new search engine, Bing and evinced keen interest to power Yahoo organic search results, the search engine giant Google, in an apparent bid to keep its market share of search, has now unveiled the “next generation” search engine upgrade codenamed Caffeine.

The released test version of Caffeine promises to "push the envelope on size, indexing speed, accuracy, comprehensiveness and other dimensions."

Google does not intend to launch project caffeine at a go but it will integrate Caffeine in a phased manner over a period of time to update its search engine infrastructure.

Googler Matt Cutts remarked on the Google Webmaster Central Blog that they are very interested in feedback for the project caffeine. The preview version of caffeine allows the Google to get reviews from the users. Google also wants the best critics to dig up issues regarding caffeine that need to be addressed. Google has provided “Dissatisfied?” and “Help us improve” links to invite reviews from users if they do not get their desired search results with Caffeine.

The early responses for the project Caffeine have been positive so far and some believed it was capable of producing real time-results at a faster rate.

Browse web seamlessly with Accelerators!!

Zeba is a young executive and a net savvy blogger. She uses multiple tabs and windows while browsing internet as she frequently needs to look for definitions, email useful parts of the content she is going through, look for information on Wikipedia, visit shopping portals and post text in blog entries. Zeba keeps copying and pasting text from one web page to another to access different web services and applications, which makes her online activities bulky and strenuous. One of Zeba’s fellow bloggers suggested Internet Explorer 8 beta 2 Accelerators to answer her online woes.

The latest build of Internet Explorer 8, beta 2 comes bundled with the Accelerator feature which allows you to quickly perform your everyday browsing tasks without having to navigate to other websites. Eliminating the need to copy and paste content between web pages, Accelerators make it faster, easier and safer for Zeba to access web applications.

What Accelerators are good for?
Leveraging the benefits of Internet Explorer 8 Accelerators, Zeba now requires just a click of mouse for things she does every day online including emailing, searching, shopping or blogging. If she wants to find out where a restaurant is, she simply highlights the address and clicks on the accelerator icon, which instantly leads her to a preview map showing the restaurant’s location. She no longer needs to copy and paste the address into a mapping site. Besides gaining quick access to her favourite web services like Gmail, Twitter, Wikipedia and Facebook, Zeba can even translate text in another language without leaving the web page.

How to use them?
Zeba simply highlights texts on a page, and then clicks on the blue accelerator icon appearing above the selection. This icon reveals a list of popular Accelerators allowing her to email the selected text to others, perform text translation, search the internet for the selected text, post it in a blog entry, define words, search for addresses and much more.
Like Zeba you can also gain quick access to as many web services as you wish, by adding accelerator providers to your Internet Explorer. You can set your default Accelerators, and add or delete them by choosing ‘More Accelerators’ and then selecting ‘Manage Accelerators’. Your Accelerators will always be available no matter on what web page you are on. Some computer may have Accelerators disabled but you can enable them through Internet options.
